Creating a Subdomain

This article assumes that your domain's DNS is hosted with us. If we do not host your DNS, please read the extra steps portion of the guide. 

Step 1: Login to your cPanel

Step 2: Either use the search bar located on the top of the page or scroll down and find "Subdomains" which is located under the "Domains" heading in your control panel and click on it

Step 3: In the subdomain box input what you want your subdomain to be called for example dev and then choose your domain from the domains dropdown in this case we will pick if you do not see your domain please follow this guide for information on how to add the domain to your account.

Step 4: Chose a Document Root" A Document root is the location where your websites files will be stored". If you would like your subdomains document root to be in your main domains document root you will need to create a document root with the following format(please remove the quotes if you choose to use this example as your document root) "public_HTML/yourdocumentroot/" if you do not wish for your document root to be in your main domains document root input a document root like this "yourdocumentroot".

Step 5: Click Create, You are now done and ready to use your subdomain if we do not host your DNS please follow the extra steps below.

Extra Steps

Step 6: Click on Home in the top menu bar (the house icon on older versions of cPanel)

Step 7: Scroll down until you can see the bottom of the bar on the left hand side

Step 8: Click on "Server information" and then when the page loads find where it says "IP Address" and make a note of the IP you see which will be in the format

Step 9: Login to your external DNS provider and create an A name record which matches the name of the subdomain you just created using the IP you found in step 8

Step 10: You are now done!
